What would I be expected to do ?
Before you accept the assignment, we fully brief you, for example what pets if any you are being asked to care for along with the location and type of home it is. For the majority of the time you are on an assignment, you are free to come and go as you wish. You will be expected to care for any pets the Client may have in line with the Clients’ instructions given to you ahead of the assignment. You would need to clean the areas of the Clients home you use and to keep them tidy during the period of your stay. We ask you to take messages for the Client from telephone calls, callers at the door and take in post or parcels, keep them safe and hand them to the Client upon their return. We undertake light gardening duties, such as watering plants, flowers and veggie patches which sitters usually enjoy doing anyway.
Why would I want to do house sitting ?
House sitting is a great way to visit other parts of the UK. For pet lovers, you have the opportunity to care for and enjoy the company of pets without having both the emotional and financial tie. It is a great way of topping up any other income you may have. You save money on your own household costs, such as gas, electricity and water bills. You will even receive a food allowance which is tax free and reimbursement of your travel costs. Finally, you can work when and where you wish,
Do I have to stay in the Clients home all day ?
No you don’t. House sitting is a responsible position but you are allowed out and about. You can spend up to three consecutive hours away from the Clients home during daylight hours. This allows you to explore the locality, visiting museums or stately homes for example, or even going out for lunch. When you are in the Clients’ home, it is not unusual for sitters to take their hobbies with them and there have been some Clients who are budding authors who have taken the opportunity to write in peace taking inspiration from their new surroundings without the distractions of being in their own home.
Have I got to go where I am told to go ?
Most definitely not ! You will be offered an assignment and we will tell you as much as we know about it, you then make your own decision whether to accept it or not. The only ask we have of you at this stage is that you don’t change your mind a few hours later. You would also be paid your petrol allowance, therefore avoiding any travel expenses. We have some sitters who like to stay fairly local, and others who love to explore different parts of the UK.
Can I invite family or friends to visit me when I am on an assignment ?
No. Should you accept an assignment which is near family or friends, we ask that you meet them away from the Clients’ home and within your permitted absence allowance.
Can I take my spouse with me ?
We have a mixture of sitters, some are single and sit by themselves, others are couples who sit together, so it’s entirely up to you.
What happens if something goes wrong ?
Unfortunately, emergencies can arise although they are thankfully fairly rare. When you are on an assignment, you will have an emergency telephone number to call should anything go wrong. This will connect you with a senior member of the team who will be able to help resolve the matter at hand.
I’m not sure it’s the right thing for me ?
Whatever your background is, or skills you have, only you will know if house sitting is for you. If you enjoy meeting new people, exploring new areas, why not call us for a more in-depth chat where you can ask whatever questions you like. We are a people business so we enjoy talking to others !
How much will I get paid ?
You will not get rich from house sitting ! You will receive a daily rate which together with a daily food allowance and a mileage allowance to recover your travel expenses albeit a modest amount of money, can supplement a pension or other income.
